In order to have antibacterial, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity in the
same molecule, 4-[1-oxo-3- (substituted aryl)-2-propenyl]-3-(4-chlorophenyl)sydnones
were synthesized by condensing 4-acetyl-3-(4-chlorophenyl)sydnone with various substituted
aryl aldehydes and characterized by spectral studies; 4-acetyl-3-(4-chlorophenyl)sydnone
itself, was prepared by acetylation of 3-(4-chlorophenyl)sydnone. The newly synthesized
compounds were evaluated for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities by cup
plate and carrageenan induced rat paw edema methods respectively. Some of the compounds
showed promising antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities.
